Your garage door is one of the things that people first see when they come to your property. After all, it takes up quite a bit of space. If your door is not level, though, it can throw off the look of the garage and the rest of your house. You don’t want a gap between the floor and the bottom of your garage door.

This space will be there when the garage door is closed, which means that all manner of things will have easy access to the garage. Dirt, leaves, water, and more can get into the garage. You may also find that you end up with insects, mice, reptiles, and more making their way into your garage. You don’t want that.

What Happened to the Garage Door?

Why is your garage door no longer level? It’s important that you understand what caused the door to become unlevel, so you can pinpoint the problem and reduce the likelihood of it happening again.

What’s the Most Common Reason?

Typically, the problem will be with the torsion springs. Quite a few garage doors will have springs that are overhead. These are called torsion springs. Some garage doors will have the springs located on the sides instead. These springs are what allow your garage door to operate properly and to open and close.

When the door is opened or closed, the springs are either compressed or unwound. The action will move the door on the track. What happens if there is a problem with a spring? Although the door might still open and close, it will have problems. It might not work as fast as it used to.

The garage door needs to be level since there could be additional problems that arise and cause the problem to worsen.

Keep in mind that an extension spring, unlike the torsion springs, will only be capable of handling a certain amount of weight. If the weight placed on the springs is too high, it could cause the door to not be level. In some cases, the door may no longer open and close.

When you notice these types of problems and you see that your door is no longer level, you can’t wait to get it fixed. The problem will not correct itself. It will only get worse.

Even if you know the extension springs could be the problem, you might not know how to level your garage door. Fortunately, it’s not too difficult, but you do need to have some tools and time. If you don’t want to do it on your own, you don’t have to. You can always hire someone to handle it for you.

Make sure you check the balance of the garage door to start. You need to know the direction in which the door is unbalanced.

To do this, you will disconnect the garage door from the opener, which will let you see how the door hangs. Next, you will run the door a few times to see if it is moving properly in the track. If you notice anything preventing it from moving correctly, that will have to be taken care of before moving on.

Let’s say that the door is running smoothly. Now, you will let it go up halfway and then stop it. Watch the door to see what happens. Does it stay in place or move to the floor? If you notice a lot of movement, the door is not balanced properly.

If you have springs that no longer have tension, there’s a good chance that the door will just fall.

Once you’ve tested the door, you have to repair it.

Make sure the power is off

Always turn the power off at the fuse box when you are adjusting your garage door. You do not want to get an electrical shock or have another injury.

Examine the cables

Now, you will want to look at the cables to see if they might need to be replaced. Over time, they can experience wear and tear, or they might even rust. When this happens, they should be replaced.

Work with professionals

If you find that you need more than a minor, simple adjustment to level the door, you should work with a professional. They understand what the garage door needs, and they can make the repair safely.

Seal Your Garage Door Properly

Often, people feel that the weatherstripping is the problem with their garage door. However, that’s not the case. Still, you do want to make sure that you have good weatherstripping, as it can ensure water, dirt, critters, and the outside air doesn’t get into the garage.

If your door is level, but you have a gap at the bottom of the door, it’s time to get the weatherstripping replaced. You can do this on your own with relative ease, or you could hire someone to do it for you.

Always keep up with your garage door maintenance. Be sure to clean and maintain all of the parts of the door including the springs, tracks, hinges, rollers, etc.
